Chemigrams: Cameraless Photography

Chemigrams are a playful way to gain an introduction to the world of cameraless photography. Invented by Pierre Cordier in 1956, he called it “mostly likely, the ultimate adventure of gelatin silver bromide”. Our workshop will take place outdoors in The Patio, as chemigrams do not require the safelight of a darkroom. After a brief introduction with examples, students will learn how to use resists that create shapes, lines, and textures on the photographic paper. We will then process the prints in traditional developer and fixer, and learn how to get color out of the black and white paper. Those who are well-versed in darkroom techniques will discover new ways to break rules and incorporate drawing, painting, and printmaking into their images. Students will leave with at least 10 finished chemigrams.

No photo experience is required, participants should be 18+ years of age.
